Humanity and to unite people everywhere in him. We can remember that the Bible frequently shows us that the voice of God to us often comes through an encounter with the most unlikely people. I pray that July will enable us to forge new bonds of friendships and common purpose within our community, when so much in our world can so easily tear people apart. It’s SUMMER SPECTACULAR time in Chudleigh. Combining CHUDFEST (Friday 5th to Sunday 13th) and CHUDLEIGH CARNIVAL (Saturday 13th to Sunday 21st), this is an amazing 17 days of events, with something for everyone every single day. Most days have multiple different events – as many as six! Two days, Sunday 14th and Sunday 21st, have just one, but they are still ‘something for everyone’ days, as they are the days of the Chudfest Summer Fete and the Carnival Fun Run. Both are big events in Chudleigh’s annual calendar. Long-standing residents of the town may be somewhat taken aback to be told that this will be the 36th annual Fun Run. Sometimes it seems the years fly by even faster than the leading runners. Week-long exhibitions in the Parish Church go back further than the Fun Run; but only recently has something different been staged each and every year, so the Fun Run, several other perennial features of Carnival Week, and of course the Carnival itself are completely safe when it comes to awards for longevity. This year’s exhibition theme is ‘ MY WORLD, YOUR WORLD, OUR WORLD ’, with a focus on ECO-Love. The exhibition opens at 10.00am on Saturday 6th and continues to 4.00pm on Saturday 13th (see Diary on page one for daily opening times). Contributors to the Exhibition include Chudleigh School, Chudleigh Writer’s Circle, The Photographic Society, SEARCH, No PLASTICS in Chudleigh,. Free Download Chudleigh Font. FAREWELL SERVICE will be in the Parish Church at 10.30am on Thursday 18th. Parents, grandparents and other friends of the children and the school are welcome to join the children in church on that occasion. The service will also be the last as Chudleigh School’s headteacher for David Barnett. A rather large number of children – some now already embarked on their adult lives – many teachers, and indeed our whole community have reason to be grateful to Mr Barnett for his years of service here. No doubt a way will be found at the church service to tell him so. Around the end of the month, a couple of services, one in Chudleigh, one in Chudleigh Knighton, are a little different from the usual. On Sunday 28th at 6.00pm, EVENING PRAYER will be offered in Chudleigh. This is in addition to the earlier 8.00am Holy Communion and 10.30 All Age Worship services. Then on Sunday 4th August a similar 6.00pm service will be offered at St Paul’s, Chudleigh Knighton as the service of the day. At the evening services, and indeed at all services in Chudleigh, Chudleigh Knighton and Trusham, everyone is invited and all will be welcomed. On the last Saturday, 27th July, there will be a COFFEE MORNING held in the Rest Centre at the Town Hall from 10.00-11.30am, in aid of the Churches’ Weekends Away. These take place every two years, and money is raised in between to cover expenses, such as paying for children so that we can offer them free places. Come and enjoy a coffee or tea, buy raffle tickets – plentiful prizes guaranteed! – and cakes. There are bound to be delicious home- made cakes on offer. Look forward to seeing you there! It is a time of year many in Chudleigh look forward to and we can be hugely thankful for those who have been working hard for many months to make it all possible. These weeks are times in the year when the community can come together in fresh ways, with opportunities to build new relationships wider than our usual circles of friendship. In a world of many divisions, which seem to be getting worse rather than better, the value of times such as Chudfest and Carnival weeks need to be treasured. Young and old, Brexit or Remain and more can come together and find these labels and barriers broken down. The local community anywhere is a unique and vital place where this can happen and this month’s opportunities worth making the most of. In all the fun and celebrations, it is good to look out for those opportunities to work, speak and play with people new to us that live around us. There are many insights from the Christian faith to encourage us in this task. We are called to follow the example of Jesus, who came from heaven to break down the barrier between God and

Chudleigh Community Project, who run the swimming pool, the emerging Chudfix Repair Café and Chudleigh Pre- School also received smaller sums of money. ‘This was a wonderful evening – it was great to hear about so many initiatives and to see connections being made between individuals and groups’, said Mary Anne McFarlane from SEARCH. Ernest Boateng and Sarah Ahemah who are both cocoa bean producers in Ghana spoke about how they farm and the labour involved. They both supply Kuapo Kokoo which owns part of Divine Chocolate. Each farmer brings on the new cocoa plants from seed before planting them out. After harvest the beans are taken out of the pods which are about the size of a honeydew melon. These multi-skills events saw teams of 12 children taking part in five different individual activities including; Javelin and ball throws, standing long jump, speed bounce and a distance run. Each event ended with all children participating in three relays: Girls, Boys, and the whole school team. Everyone worked really hard all afternoon. Chudleigh WON all the relays at both events, which helped each team to win their competition. Both teams now progress to the Teignbridge Finals in July. She spent eight weeks under canvas in fairly basic conditions with no running water and a diet consisting of rice and beans in the company of volunteers and Western and local scientists. Operation Wallacea has the aim of creating long-term surveys to track the changes in biodiversity at a number of sites around the world. The information is gathered from daily sampling from what is a very inhospitable jungle containing many poisonous creatures and plants. The information is processed in the UK and is made available to local governments and conservation groups to help in managing the environment in the future. They replied to a request from the environment committee of Chudleigh Town Council: ‘We are happy to do what we can to support the Chudleigh Prickly Hedge group and I’m sure we will be able to incorporate Hedgehog Holes between gardens.’ Also we have been notified by the biodiversity officer at Teignbridge that ‘There are a couple of large applications for housing in Bovey Tracey just come in (Local Plan allocations, not new sites), where we will ask for hedgehog holes. James House site in Chudleigh reserved matters application is about to be processed too, for which we’ll include a stipulation for hedgehog holes to be included.’ There is growing awareness of the importance to help hedgehogs by providing this simple, cheap solution in our gardens, providing a lifeline for our local population of hogs. With an original script written by one of their members, some larger-than-life characters and even some puppetry, it’s set to be a big hit for both adults and children. On Saturday 27th July from 6.30pm - 8.30pm in the Woodway Room at the Town Hall, CADS will be holding a read-through of the script and will be singing some of the songs for the Panto. For further information, or to express an interest in helping or taking part in Alice in Wonderland , please visit www..facebook.com/chudleighamateurdramatics/ Hannah Hurrell, CADS Chair Bats about Chudleigh Keen Chudleigh residents have been helping to look after the rare and protected Greater Horseshoe Bats that live in our local caves. Through their involvement in Devon Wildlife Trust’s ‘Greater Horseshoe Bat Project’, they have helped to gather valuable information about the bats, created the bat garden as a lovely community space and a place for bats to feed and supported a number of bat talks in the Town Hall. Having hosted the Project’s bat detector loan scheme for the last two years, we have now invested in some bat detectors of our own so that we can continue to find out more about the areas of Chudleigh that the bats use. For all of our efforts, Chudleigh has been awarded the first Bat-Friendly Community Award in Devon, for widespread Town Council. Free Download Chudleigh Font.
