Open source media center with Apple remote accessBoxee is a revision of the media center XBMC, with a much newer look, feel and lots more glossy features. It's designed as a one-stop media centre that is best controlled by a remote control on a big screen.Using it on a keyboard on your Mac screen is possible but as I found, becomes a headache very quickly. For a start, annoyingly you can only use it in full-screen mode. As soon as you start Boxee, it darkens the screen and takes over the whole thing. The only way to get back to your desktop is to shut it down, which is a real pain. The interface at least is very good looking and it feels like much more than your average media center.When you first run Boxee, it will start scanning your local Movies, Music and Pictures folders looking for media. In doing so, it will enable you to see cover art, reviews and synopsis related to your music and movies. Your content will be automatically shared unless you go to the Boxee homepage and change your settings.If you've got an Apple remote, then I highly advise using it as the mouse cursor disappears completely and you have no control over the keyboard. Moving the mouse about does select different options but with no cursor so it's a bit like fumbling around in the dark. To activate the remote, go to Settings>System>Apple Remote and enable 'Always Running'. Note though, that this may mean that the Apple Remote does not work with other apps while using Boxee.I can see how Boxee could be useful for someone who watches a lot of video content online. The acquisition should help Samsung improve its software for its Internet-connected televisions. An earlier report by The Marker, an Israeli Web site, said that Samsung purchased the start-up for $30 million. In a statement, a Samsung spokeswoman would confirm only that Samsung had acquired some employees and assets of Boxee but did not disclose how much it had paid. “Samsung has acquired key talent and assets from Boxee,” the spokeswoman said in a statement. “This will help us continue to improve the overall user experience across our connected devices.” Samsung has made a hard push into Internet-connected televisions, called smart TVs. Earlier this year, it said that the majority of sets it sells would be smart TVs. But, similar to Samsung’s smartphone software, its smart TV software has often been criticized as being impractical and difficult to use. That’s where Boxee could come in handy. For a few years now, Boxee has been a hot start-up at the Consumer Electronics Show, one of the biggest technology trade shows in the world. Boxee originally offered computer software for watching any format of digital video. It later shifted to selling a set-top box that runs its software.

Boxee, a free software package that pulls together multiple sources of Internet video in an easy-to-use interface, has quietly been building an army of ardent fans. But what is it about Boxee that is driving the technorati wild? Turns out, more than a handful of the 600 or so people who filed into Webster Hall in downtown Manhattan on Tuesday evening for a free Boxee-focused event couldn’t quite put their finger on it either. In fact, a number of them weren’t exactly sure what Boxee was. Aarin Clemons, who won a Mac mini computer by performing a beatboxed song incorporating Boxee’s name during a talent show portion of the evening, confessed he’d never used the service. “My friends brought me here,” he said. Vincent Polidoro, a 25-year-old filmmaker in New York who persuaded Mr. Clemons to attend the gathering, said he had recently joined the ranks of those who adore the service, which many people use to pipe video from a computer to a TV screen. “It’s nice to have an alternative way to get content,” he said. “I’m sick of being married to Comcast or some other service provider.” Attending the Boxee event, he said, reinforced the idea that “the Internet is our medium and finally, here is a service that gets how we want to use it.” Looking around the room and seeing his peers, he said, made him like the service even more. Tom Conrad, chief technology officer at Pandora, the streaming music service, said he was amazed at the turnout and by the makeup of the audience, which he said seemed fairly mainstream. This could indicate a larger shift in the way audiences are consuming entertainment: “Just the fact alone that 80 percent of Boxee users have it connected to their television, that stat alone amazes me,” he said. Avner Ronen, the 33-year-old founder and chief executive of Boxee, attributed its popularity to the company’s honesty and openness with its fan base. “We have been very open with our users, even about the bad stuff,” he said. As one attendee put it, Mr. Ronen has become a rock star thanks to his highly publicized scuffles with better-known figures and organizations like Mark Cuban and the big-media video site Hulu.
