Which agrees with Exodus 20, is “the 10 Words”. Hence, the more correct Greek translation that Biblical scholars use, “Decalogue”….Deca, 10….logue, words. Now, you might say, isn’t that being just a tad persnickety, or overly technical, because what follows is certainly ten instructions, ten commands of God that we are to follow; so, what’s the harm in whatever we choose to call it? Before I address the reasons why labeling the bulk of Exodus 20 “the Ten Commandments” presents a problem you need to know that after Ex 34:28 there are only TWO other places in the Bible where the title “the 10 Commandments” is used: and that is in Deut. 4:13 and 10:4. And in all cases the phrase that is almost universally translated in our Bibles as “the 10 Commandments”, is actually, in Hebrew “eser dabar”…. literally, the 10 Words. In order to show you the problem with incorrectly turning the word “dabar” which simply means word or words, into Commands or Commandments, I need to address another issue first. And, that is the numbering of the 10 Commandments, or better, the 10 Words. If you have a “blue bible”, that is the CJB, and you’re sitting next to a person who doesn’t have one please scoot over a little and share it with them as we look at Exodus chapter 20. You will notice in the left hand margin, preceding each of the ten so-called commandments, a single Hebrew letter. What these are actually representing is numbers, because in the Hebrew writing system the alphabetic letters ALSO are used to represent numbers. The first Hebrew letter you see is an aleph. In addition to being part of the alphabet aleph also represents the number “1”. The second letter you see (below the aleph) is the Hebrew letter “bet”, which also represents the number “2”. And, this pattern continues until we come to the Hebrew letter “yud”, which represents the number “10”. That’s not too hard to figure out. Now, understand, in the original Hebrew these Hebrew numbers ACTUALLY appeared in the text margin just as you see here in the CJB. In the oldest Hebrew manuscripts we have (including the Dead Sea Scrolls) the 10 commandments, or 10 words, were each given a Hebrew number preceding the actual command. Our modern versions have for the most part decided to delete the numbering of the commands or words. Now without looking at ANY of your Bibles can anyone remember what we have all learned at some time or another is the very first of the 10 Commandments, or 10 Words? Before we go further to better understand what is meant with this verse, I must disagree with the way the CJB interprets the Hebrew, and draw your attention to what the most scholarly of Bible translators and biblical Hebrew experts say. It is this: the way that the CJB and the majority of Bible versions translate it cannot work within the rules of Hebrew grammar. What is the Complete Jewish Bible (CJB)?

“What are these, my Lord?” First: it is interesting that in the CJB and a few other Bible versions, we’ll find the word “Lord” capitalized. And, when we find that in a Bible, it is the translator saying that this is God. And we all ought to understand by now that for many centuries, among Christians the term “the Lord” is meant to be synonymous with Jesus and Christ. So, the translator of the CJB and some other versions is saying that this Interpreting Angel is Jesus. I cannot accept this and neither should you. In Hebrew the word is adon and indeed it does mean “lord”, but only in a generic sense that was used in the same way we might say “sir”. It has no spiritual or divine element to it; it is just a term showing deference and respect. Thus, the majority of Bible versions will use the word “lord” but without capitalization (which is the correct way to look at it). Second: what do these 2 olive trees actually represent? The Angel’s response to that question doesn’t help much. Especially since he expected Zechariah to quickly understand the meaning with having it explained to him, the answer the Angel gives is truly cryptic. Many centuries ago) pictured this object on the basis of similar things found in their own culture. Even more complicating is that the same Hebrew terms that are meant to describe the same exact things often change.
