Nel tempo libero a volte mi diletto a cantare con il microfono ed il karaoke, utilizzando le basi midi e kar. Purtroppo il computer portatile appena acquistato ha Windows 7 64-bit ed una scheda audio interna che, ovviamente, non supporta i soundfonts, ovvero quei suoni campionati in formato sf2 che sono utilizzati dai synth virtuali per riprodurre files MIDI.Nel vecchio computer desktop utilizzavo una scheda audio Creative Live! che permette di caricare i soundfonts e utilizzare la scheda stessa come uscita audio per il midi. Adesso, con il notebook, il problema si era complicato notevolmente. Ho acquistato dunque una scheda audio esterna Sound Blaster Creative Surround 5.1 Pro, ma con mio grande stupore ho scoperto che non supporta (per il momento?) la gestione dei soundfonts. In compenso permette di avere un discreto riverbero audio sul microfono senza problemi di latenza.Inizialmente ho cercato di aggirare il problema sul pc portatile utilizzando VanBasco Karaoke Player, Midi Yoke e il synth virtuale Sfz, che è in grado di caricare i file sf2, ma il risultato non mi è parso dei migliori. Poi ho usato dei VST dentro dei VST Host, ma senza fortuna. Ho provato allora ad usare il riproduttore XmPlay, che mostra anche il testo del karaoke e carica i soundfonts con un add-on Midi, ma non ha la stessa usabilità di VanBasco (testo che scorre colorandosi, pitch shifter, ecc.).Ho scoperto infine VirtualMIDISynth, un programma gratuito eccezionale per il mio scopo: permette di creare nel sistema un Sintetizzatore Midi alternativo al "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth", che è quello di default, con in più la possibilità di caricare i soundfonts in formato sf2.A quel punto basterà scegliere "Coolsoft VirtualMIDISynth" sia come Default Midi Out device (MIDI Mapper) sia come output device nelle opzioni di VanBasco ed il gioco è fatto. I file midi e kar adesso suonano che è una meraviglia. Ogni volta che riprodurrete un file karaoke, in automatico partirà anche VirtualMIDISynth, le cui opzioni possono essere modificate direttamente dalla barra delle applicazioni.
