The Republic of Singapore Navy’s Naval Diving Unit (NDU) is in the process of operationalising a new class of naval craft as the unit reorganises and expands further into surface maritime special operations.Simply known as the Combatant Craft Large (CCL), the 26m-long vessel will help the NDU perform more maritime security roles, on top of its underwater and special operations taskings. Developed locally – likely by ST Engineering in partnership with the Defence Science & Technology Agency — the CCL is powered by a pair of Rolls-Royce Kamewa-series waterjets; it can achieve speeds above 35kt and has a range of 400nmi. Rescue work underway after a ferry capsized off Mumbai coast when a Navy craft crashed into it, Wednesday. (PTI Photo)Mumbai Boat Accident Highlights: Thirteen persons, including one Naval personnel and two staffers on a Naval speedboat, lost their lives after the Navy craft lost control and hit a ferry off the Mumbai coast. The ferry boat was carrying nearly 110 passengers from Gateway of India to Elephanta Island. The incident took place around 4 PM. Search and rescue efforts were immediately launched by the Navy in coordination with Indian Coast Guard and Mumbai Marine Police, according to a statement from the Indian Navy.How did the accident happen? I had boarded the ferry around 3.30 pm,” Ganesh said.“There was a brief thought in my mind that the naval craft could hit our boat, and it happened within the next few seconds,” said Ganesh, who was standing on the deck of the ill-fated Neel Kamal ferry.The eyewitness, who hailing from Hyderabad, was among the first of the 99 persons rescued after the collision.There were more than 100 passengers, including children, on board the ferry, he said.
