A federal judge orders a preliminary injunction against the online service, saying it likely violated software copyrights for playing back MP3 files. A federal judge has ordered America Online to temporarily stopdistributing a recent version of its popular service, AOL 6.0, saying thesoftware likely violates copyrights for computer code used to play back MP3files. If upheld, the ruling could force the AOL Time Warner division to pay millions of dollars in damages, marketing expenses, and costs related to retrieving or altering existing copies of AOL 6.0. At issue is software copyrights owned by PlayMedia Systems. AOL subsidiary Nullsoft holds a software license from PlayMedia for use in its Winamp MP3 player, but the court found AOL may have gone too far by including the code in a different media player bundled with AOL 6.0. According to the decision, the agreement limited Nullsoft's right to usethe software "within Winamp.""PlayMedia has established probable success in proving that AOL exceededthe grant of the license," U.S. District Judge A. Howard Matz wrote in hisdecision Monday. The ruling does not affect AOL 7.0, a new version of the software released two weeks ago. AOL hasbeen gravitating its customers to AOL 7.0 and says 2.5 million peopledownloaded the software in the first five days of its release. AOL says it will fight to reclaim its right to distribute the older version of its software. According to the company, it will lose some $39 million in prepared promotional materials for AOL 6.0, including discs burned with the software for public distribution. It estimates retrieving copies already distributed would cost tens of millions of dollars more. Lastly, AOL fears it eventually may be required to provide a "tool on demand" that would remove PlayMedia software from some 10 million copies of AOL 6.0 currently in use by its members."This is a preliminary ruling, and we respectfully disagree with it," saidJim Whitney, a spokesman for AOL. "We are already seeking a stay and willpursue an immediate appeal."PlayMedia, a Los Angeles-based company that designs media and securitysoftware, filed the lawsuit against AOL in April on grounds that theInternet service was infringing on PlayMedia's AMP computer softwarecopyright. AMP decodes digital audio files compressed in MP3 format and hasbeen used in numerous applications, including Napster, to play digitalaudio files on personal computers.PlayMedia sued Nullsoft in 1999 over unauthorized use of its software inWinamp but later agreed to license the code for $7.5

As below. Click “OK” to confirm. The Basic version – simple and straightforwardThe AOL Basic webmail version is mainly for users who work through an older browser, are on a slow internet connection or simply don’t want to change and adopt new things. After all, there is comfort in familiarity, right? The interface is simple with no bells-and-whistles. To switch to the Standard or Accessible version, locate and click on the corresponding link which should be at the bottom of the page.AOL’s great effort for senior (?) citizens – the Accessible versionApparently, a sizeable number of AOL users are senior citizens – the company has been an email service provider for a quite some time now. Anyway, I greatly applaud the effort AOL has put into the Accessible version which shows that they truly care for their subscribers.AOL prides itself on making products for people with accessibility problems. This version supposedly works better with screen-reader software and helps users to easily navigate the different sections and options. The Accessible version also supports a whole gamut of keyboard shortcuts similar to those found in email clients. The fourth version – unknownMy old AOL email account loads in an interface which is like a cross between the Standard and the Basic versions of today. I suppose it was the ‘Standard’ some years back because I see the links to Basic and Accessible versions at the bottom. It also features a plugins gallery to the right.

September 10, 2007). New features to the player included album art support, improved localization support (with several officially localized Winamp releases, including German, Polish, Russian, and French), and a new default interface skin called "Bento" which unlike the previous skins is a unified player and media library in one window as opposed to a multi-window interface.[80] This version dropped support for Windows 9x.[26][81]Winamp 5.6Winamp 5.621, when listening to the SHOUTcast streamWinamp 5.6 was released in November 2010[82] and features Android Wi-Fi support and direct mouse wheel support. Fraunhofer AAC codec with VBR encoding support was implemented. Moreover, the option to write ratings to tags (for MP3, WMA/WMV, Ogg, and FLAC) was added. Hungarian and Indonesian installer translations and language packs were added. With the release of Winamp version 5.66 on November 20, 2013, AOL announced that Winamp.com would shut down on December 20, 2013, and Winamp would cease to be offered for download after that date.[83]Five days later, version 5.666 was released with the "Pro" and "Full" installers being one and the same, in the process removing OpenCandy, Emusic, AOL Search, and AOL Toolbar from the installation bundle. This was announced to be the last release of Winamp from AOL/Nullsoft.[84]Winamp 5.7There was a Winamp 5.7 beta program for an invitation-based Winamp Cloud feature, which would let Winamp play a user's entire cloud-stored music library across all supported devices.[85] This feature would have allowed AOL to provide a music locker service that would essentially compete with other online music lockers. The beta program was cancelled months before the announcement to shut down the Winamp project.[86]Acquisition by RadionomyOn November 20, 2013, AOL announced that it would shut down Winamp.com on December 20, 2013, and the software would no longer be available for download nor supported by the company after that date.[83] The following day, an unofficial report surfaced that Microsoft was in talks with AOL to acquire Nullsoft.[87][88] Despite AOL's announcement, the Winamp site was not shut down as planned, and on January 14, 2014, it was officially announced that Belgian online radio aggregator Radionomy had bought the Nullsoft brand, which includes Winamp and SHOUTcast. No financial details were publicly announced.[89][90] However, TechCrunch has reported that the sale of Winamp and Shoutcast is worth between $5 and $10 million, with AOL taking a 12% stake (a financial, not strategic, investment) in Radionomy in the process.[91]Radionomy relaunched the Winamp website, and it was available for download again. In December 2015, Vivendi bought a majority stake in Radionomy.[92]Following Radionomy's acquisition, no new releases would officially surface until Winamp 5.8 in 2018.Winamp 5.8In September 2018, it was reported that a Winamp 5.8 beta build 3563 was leaked to various file-sharing sites.[93] The leaked build, bearing a. I finally got wa5 rc8 working the way i like it and it's 1000+ times better than wa3 ever could have been.I say let AOL have Winamp3...they like bloated programs.(don't take any of this the wrong way, I've been using wa3 since its release) Comment AOL did have Winamp3 for a while. They spent a year trying to make it AOL Media Player. That was one of the major reasons there wasn't anything official from Nullsoft, they were busy doing AOL Shit. In the end they changed their mind and started over. Screwing themselves and Nullsoft. Now we have Winamp 5.0 and AOL still has no new AOL Media Player. Comment

Also appreciated the opportunity to connect with EFF directly to address some of the concerns they have raised. However as they note in their post, the new features in our AIM preview follow industry standards and, we believe, provide users with an improved overall experience. The EFF is only partially satisfied by this line. Netizens who are serious about privacy ought to use end-to-end message encryption, such as off-the-record messaging, something the latest version of AOL IM might not support, according to the EFF. OTR messaging is available as a plugin to clients such as Pidgin and Adium."Because signing onto the new version of AIM permanently changes your account settings to log all conversations to AOL’s servers by default, we recommend that existing AIM users do not upgrade," the EFF concludes. "As always, we recommend users stay safer online by using chat clients that are compatible with OTR."Ch-ch-ch-ch-changesAs things stand the new versions of AOL IM, by default, store chats centrally for two months. The feature can be disabled on a per-contact basis by going "off the record". But this feature is not available where group chats are concerned or one of the parties uses an alternative IM client or even earlier versions of AOL IM.The EFF would like to see logging applied only as an opt-in. In addition, "off-the-record" mode ought to be robust and prominent in the user interface. Another feature of the new AIM is the ability to embed an image or a video in a conversation, simply.
