TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa Animal Services shared their advice after a positive rabies case in a dog was confirmed in Tulsa city limits."So February 14th, a bite incident was reported by a citizen here in Tulsa," said Colton Jones, the Operations Manager for Tulsa Animal Services. "A follow up investigation by our animal control officers into that incident found that the biting animal had been euthanized by its owner and buried outside of the city limits, so we made a request that it be exhumed and brought back to us so that post-bite testing could be done for rabies. In the process of submitting that to the state lab for testing for rabies, we did receive a positive result and at this time we're currently working with the Oklahoma State Department of Health for post-exposure protocols for the people involved and then taking care of any animals that are needing to be taken care of."According to City of Tulsa veterinarian Carolynne Cash, it's quite rare to have a dog test positive for rabies in the state of Oklahoma."Bites are common, but the positive rabies in a dog or cat is not super common. Probably in the whole state—I was talking to the State Health Department yesterday—probably every year between two to five...I think the ratio is kind of like three cats to two dogs basically test positive. I think it's been quite a long time since we've had one test positive here in Tulsa city limits if I'm correct."However, both Jones and Cash said you should always report an animal bite to Tulsa Animal Services right away for your safety and the safety of others."If you're bitten, the first thing that we want you to do is to report that animal bite to Tulsa Animal Services," said Jones. So really, the biggest thing is a lot of people don't want to report bite incidents in some instances, but it is drastically important and this situation kind of underscores that importance of why following our protocols and reporting those bites is seriously important."Cash shared the typical protocol that occurs after a biting incident."Usually what happens when a dog bites a person, they're picked up by the animal control officer. They come in here for a 10-day hold and if they are not showing symptoms of rabies at the end of that 10 days, they can be released back to the owner...A lot of people think the animals automatically get put down and they do not."Cash said the best way to protect yourself and your animals is to get your animals vaccinated and properly boostered with the rabies vaccine. Beyond keeping your pet safe, there's a $75 fine associated with keeping an unvaccinated animal in Tulsa city limits."I do just want to remind everybody that the source of the rabies is, I don't think we touched upon that, is from the wildlife. So that's why it's impossible to eradicate rabies. We do have quite a bit in our bats and skunks in Oklahoma in particular. Those are the main ones that test positive consistently. When Tulsa became the “oil capital of the world,” a booming expansion occurred that inspired many forms of art to entertain its new population. Tulsa Opera was here from the beginning, pre-existing the oil boom, as a necessary art form, even before the roads were paved!Between 1904 and 1930, both touring groups and local talent presented a variety of operas to culture-hungry Tulsa audiences. In the early stages of the Great Depression, University of Tulsa Dean of Music Albert Lukken was determined to continue the tradition. After a highly successful 1933 presentation of Aïda at Skelly Stadium for a crowd of approximately 6,000 people, Lukken knew there was an audience ready for more. Lukken delegated this program to Tulsa piano teacher and accompanist Bess Gowans; successful opera singers Ralph and Ione Sassano; to visit her mother; and local opera singer and influential community member Beryl Bliss. In 1948, this coalition of professional musicians and community members established The Tulsa Opera Club. The Club premiered its first opera on December 4th, 1948, Giuseppi Verdi’s La Traviata, at the Central High School auditorium. The cast provided their own formal clothing as costumes and the set was furnished by the Mayo Hotel. The Sassanos starred opposite each other in that very first La Traviata and went on to lead the Tulsa Opera Club for many years. The show also featured William Lewis, an alumni of Will Rogers High School, who continued to a significant career at the Metropolitan Opera and abroad.FUN FACT: William Lewis (pictured above as Gaston) is a Tulsa native and alum of Will Rogers High School. He went on to enjoy a wildly successful opera career at the Metropolitan Opera and worldwide.
