Is you can latch it to the incoming MIDI clock or a time division for some funky rhythmic stuff.*The Jupiter-4 has manual control over the output level with a very handy overdrive indicator.. Later synths with OTA filters had circuitry designed to compensate for the loss of volume as filter resonance increases but the JP-4 does it with a silder. The downside is you have to be mindful of your filter settings because you can swing from very soft to very loud with a filter sweep or change of resonance level -- so you have two sliders to keep an eye on. The upside is you can do things that no other synth can do, including nice distortion to the outgoing audio. If you surf just below the distortion threshold (which is why the indicator LED is handy) you can really get some nice sounds. The output slider position is saved as part of a patch making it an integral part of the Jupiter-4's sound. With IO it's also under MIDI control which opens up a lot of interesting possibilities. How about a sequence with a different level of distortion per step?*The oscillators naturally drift in nice ways that make detuning in a lot of cases irrelevant -- you can detune each of the oscillators manually with the pots on the back and there are also 4xCV in mods where you could detune via CV. There's also a unique 'subtractive' polyphonic voice mode that's more similar to how duophonic synths allocate voices -- as you hold down more notes oscillators are subtracted from the first note and applied to the new note. *There's something quite nice and distinctive about the Jupiter-4 square and pulse waves. I used to think a square wave was a square wave was a square wave -- until I heard the Jupiter-4. Square waves combined with the quirky arpeggiator in random mode is sonic bliss to me.
