Lane. Keep your eyes focused on the path you want your roll to travel – don’t get distracted by your feet, the score screens or the cutie who just bowled a strike on the lane next to yours.3. Hold the bowling ball correctlyA correct grip on the ball can go some way in ensuring it reaches its intended destination. Maintain a firm but comfortable hold on the ball, keeping your wrist straight the whole way. You should aim to release the bowling ball at the lowest point of your arm’s swing when the ball is at its closest to the ground. Don’t ‘throw’ or ‘force’ the ball down the bowling lane – rather aim for a fluid, natural release assisted by gravity.4. Don’t forget your shoulderOne of the biggest mistakes novice tenpin bowlers make just as they release the ball is to drop their shoulder too low, forcing the bowling ball into an awkward angle and into the gutter. Make sure your shoulders are parallel to the ground every step of the way, right until you release the ball – this will help you keep your swing arm in a straight line.5. Perfect your approachYou should walk up to the lane in a straight line as you begin your throw – there are no prizes for guessing where your ball will end up if you approach at an angle, so keep the strut for after your strike! It’s also a good idea to make sure your leading foot is pointing straight. So, in a hypothetical game, if player 'A' felled 3 pins with their first ball, then 5 with their second, and 1 with the third, they would receive a total of 9 points for that box. If player 'B' knocks down 9 pins with their first shot, but misses with their second and third, they would also score 9.In the event that all ten pins are felled by any one player in a single box, by no more than two throws (just as in tenpins) bonuses are awarded for a strike or spare. A strike is achieved with just the first delivery downing all ten pins, with a spare needing two throws, again just as in the tenpin sport. If all ten pins are felled by rolling all three balls in a box, the result is a ten-box, usually marked by an X (as in the Roman numeral for ten) but no additional points are awarded. (In ten-pin bowling, a strike is often scored with an "X").The maximum score in a game is 300. This is scored by bowling 12 strikes: one in each box, and a strike with both bonus balls in the 10th box. In this way, each box will score 30 points (see above - scoring:strike). This scoring system, except for the scoring sheet's appearance, and the graphic symbols used to record strikes, spares and 10-boxes, is identical to that of duckpins.Comments

2025-04-08It’s one of the most infuriating things for any tenpin bowler – watching your perfectly crafted shot take off on an unexpected angle and head straight into the gutter, resulting in an embarrassing ‘zero’ on your scoreboard. While even the best bowlers can make the occasional error and land a gutter ball, there are some simple changes you can make to your bowling technique to reduce the chances of this happening. So next time you’re building some team spirit with your crew from work on the lanes or hanging out with mates, avoid humiliating yourself by following these easy tips!1. Choose the right bowling ballIf your rolls keep bouncing all over the show, you might need a heavier bowling ball. Bowling balls have different weights, so try them all out to find your perfect fit – just don’t go for one that feels like it’s pulling your arm out of its socket! Also, make sure that your fingers fit comfortably in the grip holes (they shouldn’t just slip out), and remove obstacles that could get stuck (think oversized rings) before you bowl. If you’re unsure, our friendly Zone Bowling team can help you choose a bowling ball that works best for you.2. Position yourselfHow you face the lane can prove the difference between hitting a clean strike and watching your ball roll sheepishly into the gutter. You should always begin by facing the lane straight-on, approaching its centre and aiming to launch the ball at the arrow in the middle of the

2025-04-14August 02, 2014 “Every aspect of the format and scoring of our events is up for review" - Kevin Dornberger, World Bowling President and CEOWith hopes of making it easier and simpler for a majority of people and mainstream media to follow competitive bowling, World Bowling has created a new group tasked with exploring alternative scoring systems.World Bowling president and CEO Kevin Dornberger has announced the formation of the Alternate Bowling Scoring System working group that will find a way to engage non-bowling spectators to help the sport grow.“The hope is that coming up with a simpler format that is easy for non-bowling spectators to embrace will lead to a path to inclusion in the Olympic Games,” Dornberger said. “Our current scoring system is very confusing to people who do not know anything about bowling, and we need to take a hard look at the possibility of adoption of an alternate scoring system.”Currently at the World Championships, for example, a traditional approach to format and scoring is utilized. Bowlers and teams bowl traditional 10-frame games with six games of qualifying leading to one-game semifinals and finals.“Every aspect of the format and scoring of our events is up for review,” Dornberger said. “We need a scoring system for spectator and TV presentation that cannot lengthen the process, must be understandable by literate people, and preferably have more wins and losses than once every twenty minutes, without destroying the credibility of the sport.”To help accomplish the goal of coming up with options, Dornberger has put together an all-star working group from around the world of bowling leaders, athletes, coaches, media, and commercial bowling industry executives. The group includes:- Micael Hamberg (Sweden), former chairman, Swedish Bowling Federation, CO-CHAIR- Brian Graham (United States), Vice President, Brunswick Bowling Products, CO-CHAIR- Dr. Mohammed Alathel (Saudi Arabia), Vice President, Saudi Bowling Federation- Dom Barrett (England), athlete- Andrew Frawley (Australia), national team coach- Jim Goodwin (United States), media- Onder Gurkan (Turkey), European Tenpin Bowling Federation Presidium member- Kirk Von Krueger (United Sates), Deputy Commissioner, Professional Bowlers Association- Kelly Kulick (United States), athlete- Veronica Rajii (Chile), Vice President, Chile Olympic
